Chaper 6 test
A glimpse of 3rd grade skills for the year.
We will be wrapping up our unit on measurement and starting geometry soon. We will focus on the attributes of shapes in both 3D and 2D. We will learn angles (right, obtuse, acute) and lines such as parallel, perpendicular and intersecting.
We are learning time to the nearest hour, half hour and quarter hour, length to the nearest quarter inch, half inch and inch. We are also measuring weight and liquid volume.
Some of the vocabulary your child will be exploring at school are the following:
A.M.
P.M.
elapsed time
gram (g)
halves
kilogram (kg)
lquid volume
liter (L)
mass
midnight
noon
minute
perimeter
area
We will compare liquid volume by liter (more or less than comparisons). We will compare mass by grams (g) and kilograms (kg). It would be beneficial for your child to review fractions and measure objects around the house to the nearest quarter inch. Watch where they line up the ruler to make sure it starts at 0 and not the end of the ruler. Fractions are still challenging and it would be great if you reviewed equivalent fractions at home along with two and three digit subtraction. Thanks for your help!
Your child must be able to compare fractions, understand fractions with the same numerator and different denominators, understand fractions with the same denominator and different numerators.
Please continue to practice multiplication and division facts to increase fluency.
We are starting chapter 7, which is practicing division facts 0-10. Please practice both multiplication and division facts at home each night for fluency and better understanding. You can log into the Go Math website to watch how your child is learning these skills in school.
Chapter 6 is division: We are leaning how to share into equal groups to model division.
32/4=8 32 is the dividend, 4 is the divisor, 8 is the quotent.
Multiplication fact practice: please practice these facts at home to increase fluency.
Chapter 4 and 5 will continue multiplication!
We are learning specific math facts in chapter 4. These focus on previous strategies learned to help understand how to find the product and increase fluency!
Next week:
Lessons: 4.3, 4.4, 4.5, and 4.6
Chapter 3 is Multiplication!!
Vocab:
Array: a set of objects arranged in rows and colums
Commutative Property of Multiplication: the property that states you can multiply two factors in any order and get the same product.
Equal Groups: groups that have the same number of objects. For example, 5x6=30. There are five equal groups of six in 30.
factor: a number that is multiplied by another number to find a product
Identity Property of Multiplication: the property that states that the product of any number and 1 is that number.
Multiply: when you combine equal groups, you can multiply to find how many in all; the opposite operation of division
Product: the answer in a multiplication problem.
Zero Property of Multiplication: the property that states that the product of zero and any number is zero.
Chapter 5: Use Multiplication Facts
5.1 describe patterns in multiplication
5.2 find the unknown numbers
mid chapter review
5.3 problem Solving
5.4 Multiplication strategies with multiples of 10
5.5 multiply 1-digit numbers by multiplies of 10
Chapter 5 test
Chapter 2
bar graph: a graph that uses bars to show data
frequency table: a table that uses numbers to record data
horizontal bar graph: a bar graph in which the bars are read form left to right
key: the part of a map or graph that explains the symbols
line plot: a graph that uses marks to record each piece of data above a number line
picture graph: a graph that uses pictures to show and compare information
scale: the numbers placed at fixed distances on a graph to help label the graph
vertical bar graph: a bar graph in which the bars are read from the bottom to the top

Logging into Go Math: (This is for the online component to use at home.) The first time on, you will need to click Billings School Dist. and Arrowhead, you can save this on your computer. The most beneficial components at home will be in the "My Library" section. The first square has videos that are great to see how we are teaching the skills in class. I know it is presented in a different way then a lot of us learned in the past. The goal is to provide many ways to understand math and allow kids to use the ones that are best for each individual. These methods also provide a more concrete understanding versus I found the answer, but I can't explain what the numbers mean. Other great resources are the yellow squares below the video to see the student editions books and activities. I hope this is helpful.
Xtra Math is a great website to help your child increase math fact fluency and improve basic math skills. I made a few modifications to Xtra Math. Since we are practicing multiplication, I now have each child's log in set at multiplication. Please see that your child takes time to login and complete at least three lessons per week. The pin number to login is glued in your child's planner. If you do not see it, please contact me.
Front Row is a math program that will track progress and it is also fun for the kids. The number they need to log in is their name along with 5fpzab. Students will receive their log in info. soon!
